Retrieving Revenue Payroll Notifications (RPNs) is essential for applying the correct tax credits and cut-off points to employee payroll.

If this error appears when you attempt to retrieve RPNs for an employee, it may be due to one of the following reasons below.

We’ve compiled a list of possible causes for RPN failure and how to resolve them.

RPN date

If this is your first RPN retrieval for the tax year, ensure that the "date last updated" field is blank for all employees.

To resolve this, follow the steps in the relevant section below.

Portal

  1. Click Uploads then under Irish Statutory Uploads, click Load Employee PAYE Certificates.

  2. Select Retrieve Employee RPN.

  3. From the Company drop-down menu, select the relevant company reference.

  4. Leave the field "date last updated" blank.

  5. Click OK.

Back Office

  1. Click CorePay then click Employee.

  2. Click ROS interfaces then click Load Employee PAYE Certificates.

  3. Select Retrieve Employee RPN.

  4. In the Company Reference field, enter the company reference.

  5. Leave the field "date last updated" blank.

  6. Click OK.

Tax certificate

The tax certificate may be obsolete. Check that the tax certificate has not expired, as certificates expire after two years. Additionally, ensure that any changed password in ROS is updated in our system.

To resolve this, follow the steps in the relevant section below.

Portal

  1. Click Manage Payroll then highlight the relevant pay group.

  2. Click the Outputs tab then click ROS.

  3. Click PAYE Modernisation then click Load Digital Certificates.

  4. From the Company drop-down menu, select the company reference.

  5. In the Certificate Password field, enter password.

  6. Click Browse then select a location to store the file.

  7. Click OK.

Back Office

  1. Click CorePay then click Update.

  2. Click Paye Modernisation, then double-click on Load Digital Certificate.

  3. From the Company drop-down menu, click the list icon to select a reference.

  4. In the Certificate Password field, enter the ROS password.

  5. Click Browse then select a location to store the file.

  6. Click OK.

Invalid Characters

If your certificate is correct, check for invalid characters in the employee’s records. This issue often arises with new employee records.

To resolve this, a support analyst will need to validate the data for the pay groups related to the company for which you are retrieving RPNs. Please raise a new case online, referencing this article's title.
